Martha Jablonski-Jones
After studying Fine Arts at the University of Alberta, Martha spent several years in illustration and graphic design, working in pen and ink. But painting always called to her, and eventually she gave it her full attention. As her commitment grew, she relocated to the Arc, a live/work studio in east Vancouver, to focus on the surrounding urban landscape. The companionship of other artists was a great motivation for creativity and personal progress, while walks through interesting neighbourhoods provided her with imagery. Back alleys and imposing old hydro structures became favorite topics. During that period she showed her work at local venues including the Gachet, Britannia, The Cultch, and Gibson’s Public Art Gallery, among others. Later, some time spent in Texas infused her with a recharged love of warm colour, as well as an interest in vintage and ‘roots’ themes which then appeared in her work. In turn, moving to the Comox Valley with its natural settings has added an organic dimension to her work. Here on the Island She has had the opportunity to show at the CVAG, TOSH, and the Sooke fine arts show, as well as local galleries Artful and Pearl Ellis.
The heart of her practice
As Martha's outlooks have gone through changes, her subject matter has become more eclectic rather than narrowed, but remains motivated by a sense of place. Her paintings focus on the world around her rather than on any internal enigmas Acrylic on canvas is her preferred paint medium, and the art is usually representational. Lately she has been working in collage, creating mixed media art journals, emphasizing visual and graphic elements of line, colour, and pattern. These journals often deal with more speculative and inner themes. Regardless of theme or media, Martha continues to work from her Courtenay home and always enjoys the privilege of showing her art.
